Nom De Guerre, City of Poets Anthology 2023

Nom de Guerre is a collection of short stories which explores war through the lens of the protagonists, and the victims. Dark, visceral and uncompromising, it takes no prisoners, guiding you through a brutal tour de force from the highest chambers of power to the depths of the disenfranchised.

It questions an economic paradigm where the relentless need for expansion, for resources and for new markets places a dollar value on human life and puts a different dollar value depending on where you’re from.

It relentlessly unpicks the hypocrisy of the popular narrative which selectively applies the label of terrorist not based on the nature of the atrocity, but on who has committed it, and examines the reasons which could drive someone to commit such heinous, self defeating acts.

Tackling themes ranging from Western Imperialism and the incessant pursuit of geopolitical control in the middle east to Religious Fundamentalism and the dangers it poses to peaceful coexistence and human rights, and with settings from western front trenches to the jungles of Vietnam and the Congo, and from the Chilean Andes to the refugee camps of the Gaza Strip, it explores the best, and worst of the human condition, examining the limitless joy derived from basic connection, and laying bare the trauma and suffering of grief with vivid imagery and startling psychological depth. It contains tales of forbidden love, of estrangement, of connection, of reconciliation, of lost childhoods, and of endings, but also of new beginnings.

Written with an inviting sense of realism, it draws you in to the worlds of the individual characters, forcing you to love or hate, to empathise or despise, and to feel victory or defeat.
